Flavor of the Month

We’ve all experienced many “flavor of the month” marketing opportunities. The first one that comes to mind is ice cream. Also specialty coffee drinks, doughnuts, or treats from a candy store. There is something about trying the new “in” thing that is a refreshing change. It’s something different to experience and yet, I’m curious: how often do you go back to your favorite? Sure, we occasionally try the newly-discovered flavor, but based off my own experiences, there are the “oldies but goodies” we always prefer.

What happens with this Flavor of the Month concept when it applies to a work setting, volunteer situation, or life? Do any of these phrases sound familiar:

  • This is going to be the BEST system we every implemented!
  • Once we put this idea into place, everything will change!
  • When we restructure this situation, the organization will flow so much smoother!

I’m sure I could go on and on with the list.

Or how about these types of new shiny pennies:

  • Stanley Mugs/Cups in all different types of colors
  • Fidget spinners for kids
  • Different hairdos or hair colors
  • A brand new gismo that promises to deliver something new and improved

Insert your own new shiny penny into the list. I know you know what I’m talking about.

We are inundated with a new flavor of the month all the time. Sometimes the change is welcome—a shift from what we’ve been doing, expanding our cranium. Perhaps the new flavor will truly do something better. But sometimes the change is nothing more than busy-work and as we implement new flavors of the month, we set aside much of our past effort for a new and shinier option.

How do we find the balance and what are some things we can put in place to guide our decisions? I put together 5 key things I have been using to make sure I don’t get caught up in the flavor of the month club.

  • Ask yourself: do I really NEED this? What would it replace? Would this “new” flavor shift enough to be worth investing time and money into right now?
  • Give yourself an extra 24 hours (or longer) to make a decision. Step away from the decision to give yourself time and space. Many times, we make impulsive decisions and giving yourself 24 hours can take away the “buying in the moment” situation.
  • Get clear about why you are changing something. What will this move you towards? What are you saying “yes” to and what are you saying “no” to?
  • Give yourself permission to “try something out” without getting into an all-or-none trap. An example of all or none would be: I either implement this process or I don’t. What if you explored something in the middle? Perhaps you could try a trial period or one piece of something.
  • Accept that nothing is perfect. Have some self-compassion. Each day is a new day. Integrate your learning from each experience, which can propel you to better decisions and choices each time.

I hope this has been useful for you. I’m curious what you’ve experienced around “flavors of the month.”

Keep SHINING in Your Brilliance!

Blessings, Peace and JOY –
