What Puzzles Can Show Us About Humanity

Somewhere around the end of November, there is a ritual that takes place in my family—the start of the first winter puzzle. An official puzzle table is erected. From the start of the first puzzle to somewhere around the end of April/beginning of May, puzzle after puzzle is put together. There is great conversation, frustration, and unique styles as we work on the puzzles—even different times of day that each of us likes to work on them. When one puzzle is finished, we admire it for about a day until we take that one down and put the next up.

This year, I have reflected quite a bit on this concept of putting together a puzzle. In my effort to be more fully present and mindfully aware, I have taken the time to look at each piece, admiring the different shapes and sizes, noticing how each piece fits just right. I am fascinated by the ways some of the pieces fit into place, even when I don’t think some of them will. Similarly, I’ve also been reflecting on humanity during this season. There are a few insights I’ve gained and I’d love to share them with you:

  • Each of us is unique, beautifully created for purpose, and we matter.
  • Each of us has a place—sometimes we need to try out a few different spots to see where we have that “just right” feeling.
  • Each of us is a part of a bigger picture.
  • Without each of us, a piece is missing—and when pieces are missing, we all suffer.
  • Sometimes being a part of humanity can be frustrating. We are finding our place, trying out different things…it’s part of the journey.
  • Working together fosters momentum and movement.
  • Looking at humanity from different angles and perspectives often provides new wisdom and insight to connect and move forward.
  • Trusting the process is paramount.
  • We can ALL make it to the finish line.
  • Together we are stronger.

I’m curious about the connections you make around puzzles and humanity. I’d love to hear them. I’m also curious if you enjoy putting puzzles together. What are your favorites?

Blessings, Peace and JOY –
