Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

As a child, my mom and I would often sing Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. I’m pretty sure we sang it in pre-school too. As I got older, I would often change the lyrics. Most of the time the lyrics are positive and well-meaning. Occasionally, well, let’s just say I would not be winning any awards at church.

As we were putting the star on this year’s Christmas Tree, the song kept going through my mind. There is also something about the sky this time of year. When the air is crisp and cool, and the sky is clear and dark, the stars do sparkle and truly light up the sky. I imagine what it would have been like in history without electricity and flashlights. Truly, the stars in the sky guided nighttime travelers. In fact, upon deeper reflection, I have a whole new appreciation for the night sky. I find myself looking at the stars and wondering about their stories.

How long has each star been a part of the galaxy?

Is the star where I am gazing a part of a constellation?

What is the star’s purpose?

Do stars have multiple purposes?

What happens when the star’s light begins to dim?

Are the stars aware of dimming or does it simply happen?

As I wrote down and pondered these questions, I realized that each of us is a star. Now, I realize not all of us are the Hollywood Star—shining so brightly that everyone looks at it. We are all, however, a star to someone and we do each have a purpose. In fact, I vote that we all have multiple purposes. I am also aware that it is easy for us to often let our light dim and we often aren’t aware of it. We have to work at keeping our light shining bright. We are part of a community and we connect with others. We are part of humanity and each of us matters—just as the stars guiding us on our way on a dark night.

I invite you to do a little star-gazing and as you do, notice the way the star is a metaphor for you. What are the ways you are twinkling? What community are you a part of (you can even name your community constellation)? What are your purposes? What is the impact you’d like to create? What are the ways you keep your light shining bright?

Twinkle twinkle little star

How I wonder what you are

As I look from you to me

It opens up my eyes to see

Brilliance shines and flows from thee

Renewing our humanity

Blessings, Peace and JOY –
