We have a lot going on in our world right now. I dare say that at any time in history there were multiple things going on. But due to social media, instant access to news, polarized viewpoints and more, the way we are experiencing this time in history seems to be different.
There is an impact due to the way we are experiencing life right now.
For many individuals, getting caught up on all the news, events, barrage of negativity, and plethora of one crisis after another on a global scale leads to overwhelm, confusion, disparity, and loss. Sometimes it even creates a sense of hopelessness. It can be difficult to see how any one of us can make a difference.
I have good news! We CAN make a difference. It starts with acting locally.
I believe that “locally” begins inside each one of us. It’s the way we get up in the morning. Do we grumble all the way from the bed to the bathroom or do we do as Zig Ziglar would and say “it’s going to be a great day” while slapping his hands on his legs? We may not have a choice in what happens to us but we do have a choice in how we respond.
The way we show up in the world affects our families, communities, and ultimately, yes, it does flow into the world. Can you imagine the shift in our overall well-being if all of us took a little more time for self-care and self-compassion? I often hear from others that they “don’t have time” for themselves. Friends, I have a cold hard truth. If we don’t make the time, there is a big stake. Burnout, health issues, and loss of relationships are just a handful what can happen. Even 10 minutes of walking matters. If you need creative ideas for carving out some self-care time, please reach out. I’ve had to be a little creative myself.
Here are a few other ways we can act locally:
- Treat Others with Kindness—A smile, holding a door open, offering to carry someone’s groceries, walking a dog for someone who is unable due to illness.
- Get Involved—We need volunteers, from serving meals to taking care of animals to cleaning up the community to being a listening ear at the nursing home. There is also an added benefit: while the recipient is grateful, you will experience a new level of blessing in your heart.
- Take Time—For friends and family, tea or coffee, walk, connection and more. I put these things on my calendar regularly. I don’t want to lose my valuable connection.
What are some ways that you can act locally? What is one you are committing to this week? I invite you to notice the impact of acting locally. I’d love to hear about it!
Keep SHINING in Your Brilliance!
