Taking a Quest

I recently had a conversation with my boxing trainer and talked about what I was seeking in life. I told him I want real relationships. Authenticity. Transparency. Honesty. Integrity. As I stated each of these things out loud, he said—you are on a quest. Yes, I said, it is a quest. Not a goal. Not a destination. It’s a quest for what I want in my life.

Merriam-Webster defines a quest as a journey made in search of something. This feels different to me than a goal. It got me thinking about when a quest may serve us better in our lives.

Here is what using a QUEST opens up for us:

(1) Curiosity. When we are searching, we are curious. What is around the corner? What comes next? What is possible? How are these things connecting? We continually ask questions to move forward in the journey. Sometimes we don’t even know what we are specifically searching for with each small step, but the larger quest drives the questions. And the answers to the questions keep us moving forward.

(2) New Perspectives. When we are searching for something, there are so many paths and possibilities—often not ones we would have considered. But because of the approach to a quest, we invite different perspectives and new ways of looking at things. Sometimes it is this new perspective that makes all the difference! Sometimes the new perspective can be so profound that we actually shift what the original quest was about.

(3) Growth. Embarking on a quest allows us to grow in new and multiple ways. Opening ourselves up to exploration, curiosity and new perspectives tells our physical, emotional and spiritual body that we are open to this growth and change. Learning new things, meeting new people, testing out different theories—it is all a part of growing and emerging.

(4) Igniting the Soul. Quests ignite our soul in a whole new way. When we are searching and seeking something important to us, the soul knows. When we come across something that resonates with our soul, there is a sense of connection. A knowing. An igniting. Once the soul is ignited, look out! It is powerful beyond imagination. Of course we have to choose whether or not we will do something about this igniting, but I believe a quest opens the door for igniting the soul in a deep, meaningful way.

(5) Purpose. The quest frames purpose in a unique way. We all have purpose for our lives. The quest ties into the very core of our being. Who we are. Who we want to be. How we want to create impact. What type of legacy will we leave? The quest defines more of our purpose and how we show up in the world.

I am in my quest right now to find real people. Real conversations. Authenticity. Transparency. A willingness to have tough conversations. A willingness to see people. A willingness to listen. My soul is ignited. I look forward to new perspectives, growth and an increased sense of my purpose on Earth.

Do you have a quest? I’d love to hear about it.
